RIGGING TIPS
Side-mount rigger with back stay

This type of rigger is attached to the hull with the back stay closer to the bow (behind the rower) and the front stay closer to the stern (in front of the rower). Note that the back stay is sometimes a different color (e.g., black) than the main and front stays (e.g., silver); also, it’s the stay that pivots on the pin, whereas the other two stays are fixed in position.
Order of rigger fasteners
Bolt, hull, flat washer, lock (split) washer, nut
How to rig a quad
A quad is rigged starting from the bow (1 seat) and working toward the stern (4 seat) with the rigger stays overlapping between 1 & 2, 2 & 3, and 3 & 4 seats. This means that, for example, the front stay of the 1-seat (bow) rigger ends up underneath the back stay of the 2-seat rigger, the front stay of the 2-seat rigger ends up underneath the back stay of the 3-seat rigger, and so on to the stern.

Outside arm: Arm farthest from the oarlock and blade = left arm if you’re on port (8, 6, 4, or 2), right arm if you’re on starboard (7, 5, 3, or 1)
Inside arm: Arm closest to the oarlock and blade = right arm if you’re on port (8, 6, 4, or 2), left arm if you’re on starboard (seats 7, 5, 3, or 1)

THE HUDSON RIVER
Article on the hydrodynamics of the Hudson River estuary
Excerpt…In the vicinity of the Battery, the tide is produced by a progressive wave which propagates in from the Atlantic Ocean. The time of maximum flood currents occurs at the same time as high tide, and the time of maximum ebb currents occurs at the same time as low water. The times of the two slack (time when the current is not moving) waters of a tidal cycle occur at the times that the water surface is at its tidal mean level. This situation changes markedly as you move upstream. For example, near the George Washington Bridge, maximum flood occurs about 30 min before high tide and maximum ebb occurs about 30 min before low tide. This time shift increases even more farther upstream. As Albany is approached, the tide wave takes on the characteristics of a standing wave. The time of slack water occurs much closer to high water and low water. Maximum ebb currents begin to occur nearly 3 h before low water and maximum flood currents begin to occur about 3 h before high water….
